Lake Atitlan and Around Hotels

Lake Atitlan, also know as Lago Atitlan, was created in an immense volcanic eruption 85,000 years ago. Since then, volcanoes cropped up all around the newly-created basin, which led to the creation of the lake. Despite its fiery past, Lake Atitlan is now epitomizes tranquility in its panoramic volcanic views and azure waters.

The lake´s largest town, Panajachel, became a magnet for tourists during the 1960´s and since then has seen a large growth in lodging options.Unless you want something more traditional or rustic (in which case check out the limited options in other towns around the lake), Panajachel has the entire spectrum of possible accommodations and is the main hub for tourists and nightlife in the area. Lake Atitlan hotels start at around US$10.00 for a basic, single room and range upwards of US$100-150.00 for the luxury options, such as the live-peacock-adorned Hotel Atitlan. Another popular (if pricey) spot is the Hotel Posada Don Rodrigo (US$75.00 per night) which lies at the end of the main drag and offers lakefront location and a big water slide.

Lake Atitlan hostels are difficult to come by, but plenty of comparable hospedajes abound in Panajachel. Most rooms are under US $20.00, and many for under $10 for the more budget-concerned. These hospedajes, which are usually simply a few extra rooms in a family´s house, offer cheap, although sometimes dingy rooms, so make sure you ask to see the room before you commit to anything.
