Safety

Visitors to Panajachel do not have a lot of problems with violent crime as the area's Mayan villages generally have a lower crime rate than most U.S. cities, though petty theft and pickpockets can happen anywhere at any time. The town has the ability to attract a lot of Guatemalans on a weekend getaway from the nation's capital -- a lot of which tend to be gringeros, also known as Guatemalan men on the prowl for foreign women. Instances of drinks being drugged have been reported so always mind your beverage and refrain from accepting tragos from strangers that could be spiked.
