There are lots of hiking opportunities around San Marcos from exploring trails in the lush valley to longer treks across the headland to San Juan or Santa Cruz. The three-hour trek to Santa Cruz is quite strenuous, requiring some steep ascents and descents, but rewards richly with its fantastic views, scenery and brushes with traditional local life. Follow current advice on safety precautions and leave valuables at home. Jovenes Maya (in Barrio Three) and Luis Chololito (502 41775213) offer guided hikes of the area. Keep in mind that due to the altitude, it can be easy to get out of breath, even if you are in good health.
