Getting Around

The most atmospheric and enjoyable way to travel around the lake is by lancha. Public lanchas leave Panajachel every half hour from 6.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. and take about 40 minutes. Cost is $3. Boats leave San Pedro every half-hour from 6am to 5pm, take 15 minutes and cost $1.20. Some lanchas are direct while some stop at all the villages; ask the captain to find out which is which. A journey between adjacent villages costs between $1.20 and $1.80. If the wind is up and the lake is covered in white caps, most lanchas will refuse to leave. A private lancha costs about $12 for the whole boat, one way.

Tuk tuks are available for short journeys. The drive to San Juan has some dramatic views and costs $3. San Pedro is $5 or $3.60 p.p. if more than one. Tzuznuá is $6.
