A small, traditional village, Tzununá is a pleasant thirty-minute walk from San Marcos, though the last bit of the trail is something of an uphill slog. The village was originally located on the lakeshore but mudslides caused by Hurricane Stan in 2005 destroyed it, and the villagers decided to rebuild on high ground. This is a peaceful village that tourists rarely visit; where children fly their kites in the street and women wash clothes by the river.

Tzununá is one of a couple of places at the lake that has canopy tours. Available through the Hotel Xocomil (, it costs $7.50 per person for the 325 meters (1,060 ft.) long zipline. Afterwords, if you feel inclined to spend the night, check out the simple rooms that seem a tad expensive ($25) even after you take into account the swimming pool and basketball court. The restaurant serves local and international fare.

Lomas de Tzununá ( has much fancier accommodation at even dearer prices. Rooms here start at $75 for one person or $85 for two including breakfast and tax.

Other places nearby Tzununá: San Pedro La Laguna, Santiago Atitlan, San Juan La Laguna, San Marcos La Laguna, Panajachel, Santa Cruz La Laguna, Santa Catarina Palopó, San Antonio Papoló, Jaibalito and San Lucas Tolimán.
