Nebaj

Far from the gringo-hippie circuit around Lake Atitlan or the Spanish schools and backpacker-bars of Antigua, you will find the remote and authentic town of Santa Maria Nebaj. This unspoiled mountain village with adobe walled-houses, cobbled streets and charming inhabitants is known as the gateway to the Ixil and is a great jumping-off point for trips.

Nebaj has something to offer almost every traveler. It is a great place to settle-in and improve your Spanish or study Mayan culture in an un-rushed non-commercial atmosphere, especially if you stay with a local family. It also provides easy access Guatemala’s nature, from relaxed rambles around the countryside to hard-core hikes up and down big hills the views you’ll come upon are undoubtedly impressive.

Nebaj is steeped in history and was the unfortunate location of some terrible atrocities carried out by the government throughout the civil war from 1960 to 1996. Although Nebaj’s citizens are now the keepers of many particularly sad memories, the town is now quite safe, and you will not hear much talk of the war unless you probe. Indeed many people are now returning to their homeland after fleeing decades ago and the town and surrounding area is a hive of business and development activity.

The Nebajeños are Ixils, one of the smallest ethnic groups in Central America, and are famous for their weaving (look out for the embroidered huipiles with geometrical designs in greens, yellows, reds and oranges), observance to traditional values and living in tune with the environment around them. They are also serious about their fiestas— especially saints' days.
