After years of suffering from war, poverty and misfortune, Nebaj is now the center-point for community development in the Ixil area s. Two organizations providing opportunities for travellers to do their bit are Proyecto Mosaico (www.promosaico.org) and Social Entrepreneur Corps (www.socialentrepreneurcorps.com), which also runs www.newdevelopmentexperience.com. The former offers both short- and long-term placements for a donation of $55-270, and organizes home-stays, language classes and pre-trip orientation. The latter was founded by the guys who set up El Descanso and has a mix of programs for individuals as well as groups.
