Providing the gateway to Volcan Tajumulco, San Marcos La Laguna lies on the western shore of the Atitlán crater lake, which was described by Aldous Huxley as the most beautiful lake in the world. The town is regularly described as possessing a “New Age” feel for its emphasis on self-rejuvenation through yoga and meditation in the various retreats it hosts. You will likely encounter adverts for silent retreats, astrological readings and water rebirthing in town. With scenery that is thick with vegetation and visually stunning, San Marcos provides a natural haven with a tranquil atmosphere where one might just really hear their spiritual calling.

Up the hill and down a cobbled street you will find the central part of the village. If you intend to stay over in San Marco ask the boat to drop you at either the Schumann or the Pirámides dock.  A slanting trail leaves the village up through magnificent scenery over to Santa Lucía Utatlán.

The town is divided into the prime waterfront real estate of the tourist town and the local town further up the escarpment. The tourist part caters to travelers with money in search of spiritual enlightenment. A headland provides many secluded places to sunbath and swim, and the shore offers several docks. Some suggest that the tiny beach on the far west side of town is the best spot to take a swim and catch some sun. Some bars provide live tranquil hippie music and the resort is a particularly popular destination for full moon parties.

The town is populated by a number of ex-pats who run many of the hotels, restaurants and services. The lake can get very cold at night so bring warm clothing. Also, there have been a number of recent reports of travelers being robbed and attacked in the area, so extra vigilance is advised.
