Chicken Bus – “Camioneta”

Did you ever thought what happened to your second grade school bus? Well they are in Guatemala, but with colorful outsides because they are modified and decorated. Is true! They are school buses but now are used in Guatemala to transport goods and people between communities; they are called “Chicken Bus” in Spanish their called Camioneta.

Why Chicken Buses? Well there are 2 reasons for this name; first, is because de rural people in fact transport live chickens and animals in the buses and second, is because the driver “Piloto” and the helper “Ayudante” sits in a seat for two people three or maybe four people to get more passengers and get it full, so the people really feels like chickens inside.

The colorfully and decorations of the Chicken Buses indicates who is the Owner of them, also the Chicken Buses have a girl name o a nickname, probably the daughter or the wife’s name.

So this is important to know if you will going to use one chicken bus… the Piloto has a schedule in the route, that means that you will going to have the experience of your life to feel the transformation of your second grade school bus into a Formula 1 Race Car, specially if they have to get more passengers in their route and be on time in the next bus station. The Ayudante is going to yell outside of the Chicken Bus, to alert the people that are waiting for the bus, that they are coming and if they are the ones the people are expecting for. Also the “Ayudante” is going to tell the passengers to move inside (corranse, corranse… atrás hay espacio). Sellers are going to get in the buses to show their products, maybe someone wants to buy a marañon seed bag for dessert or something else. But the action do not ends here, if another Chicken Bus of other company is getting closer, the Piloto increase the speed and you and the people inside the bus, will going to be on a race bus on the streets! Hang on very good your pack, if you are sited enjoy it and if you are stand up, well hang up where ever you can and try to not loose your balance.

This is an experience that you will go to talk at home after your heart calms down again.

Of course take care using a Chicken Bus,

•Use a small backpack.

•Take care in front of you your camera and personal stuffs.

•Don’t use a wallet in your back pocket of the pants.

•Take with you cash so you don’t have to take out your wallet in front of other people.

Good luck!
