Chichicastenango Market

Chichicastenango has been a trading post since pre-Hispanic times. Known simply as “Chichi,” the Thursday and Sunday markets here are full of traditional culture and handicrafts.

Iximché Ruins

This pre-Columbian archeological site was founded in 1470 by the Kaqchikel Maya. Thi shas been a popular stop on the ruin circuit since German archaelogist Jorge Guillemin began exploring and excavating here in 1960.

Lago Atitlán

Volcanoes and tiny indigenous villages ring this clear-blue lake, Guatemala's pride and joy. Take a private boat tour, climb surrounding volcanoes, or just take in the view from a hammock.

Pacaya Volcano National Park

This highly active volcano sprays lava and ash so often that its shape is ever-changing. Dedicated as a national park in 2001, Pacaya Volcano National Park is a great escape from Guatemala City.

K'umarcaaj Ruins

This archeological site was the ancient capital of the Quiché nation, who once ruled the highlands. Although the town was destroyed by Spanish conquistadors in 1524, the ruins are frequently used by indigenous Mayans for ceremonial purposes.

El Biotopo de Quetzal

This protected ecosystem is named after the Quetzal, Guatemala's national bird. If you are looking for good hiking trails and plenty of birdwatching, this is the place to go.
