San Rafael Chilascó Overview

Location:
Guatemala

San Rafael Chilascó is a small agricultural community situated about 12km from Cobán. The people here have chosen to take charge of tourism in the area, focusing on ecotourism and education in their tours. The Chilascó Community Tourism Organization (5301-8928 or 5776-1683) charges $2 for entry to the visitors center, from where you can rent horses, borrow rubber boots, hike to the nearby waterfall or hire a guide. Opinions differ on whether the Salto de Chilascó is Central America's highest waterfall at an impressive 130 meters. Either way the scenery is spectacular and it is certainly worth a visit. In terms of accommodation, the tourism organization will try and accommodate you in their own basic lodge or with a local family for around $5 a night, and there are several comedores in the area where visitors can eat. Buses traveling between Salamá, Cobán and Guatemala City pass the Highway CA-14 turnoff, from where visitors can travel into Chilascó.
