The Mayan City Of El Mirador

Lost Mayan World

The great Mayan site of El Mirador

The Mirador, known to many as the cradle of Mayan Civilization, is located in the dense jungles of northern Guatemala. El Mirador is one of several large ancient cities that resides in the Mirador Basin, which is a vast expanse of virgin rainforest. El Mirador is comprised of miles of unrestored pyramids and structures that have seemingly became part of the jungle. The area, 38 square miles in size, has been seemingly untouched by man for thousands of years.

El Mirador originally functioned as a trading center. At its peak, it was home to nearly 100,000 Mayans, which essentially designated it as the first American city. The vast ruins were unearthed in 1926, and other than some small excavations they have remained largely untouched. Occasionally there are some archaeologists working on the site, but the excavating that they are doing is typically minimal.

There is no road to visit to El Mirador, at we organize 5 day trek through the jungle or join one of the few helicopter tours that run to El Mirador.
