Eco-lodges In Guatemala

If you are looking to appreciate Guatemala's natural beauty with as little environmental impact as possible, book a stay at one of the country's many eco-lodges. The majority of eco-lodges in Guatemala are found in the Petén region, but they are also found in other areas of the country, such as along Guatemala's Pacific Coast.

The good news is, the number of eco-lodges are growing. However, some hotels claim to be “eco-lodges” but aren't actually making any strides in ecological protection. To make sure your hotel isn't cheating the system by just slapping “eco” in their title, don't be afraid to ask what guidelines they follow to promote eco-responsibility. Some of the most important aspects to look for in an eco-operator are:

1. Environmental Impact: Does the hotel recycle, conserve water and energy, and manage waste properly? These are surefire signs that the place you are researching is ecologically minded.

2. Conservation: How does the hotel support protected areas? Protected areas can be visited by tourists, but a good eco-hotel should be conserved with preserving natural habitats.

3. Sustainability: Does the hotel use local construction materials and products? Everything from the ground-up should be local, including building materials and foods used for meals. This is vital for the long-term success of eco-tourism

4. Community Involvement: How is the hotel involved with the local community? Ideally, an eco-lodge would be community owned and run, and would support community development projects.

5. Education: Is the hotel trying to teach environmental responsibility? Every guest should leave an eco-lodge having learned something about eco responsibility.
