Gay And Lesbians

South American machista culture can not only make things awkward for women traveling alone, but also prove dangerous at times for gay couples traveling in Guatemala. Themachista attitude is more prevalent among Ladinos than Mayans but it can be encountered anywhere at any time. Some parts of the country may be slightly more tolerant than others but rather than risk harassment, or sometimes even violence, it is best to be discreet with your partner. Open displays of mutual affection in public should be avoided. In the more urban areas such as Guatemala City and Antigua there are a number of openly gay venues. Zona 1 and the ‘Old City’ in Guatemala City are where most of the gay bars and clubs can be found. Antigua can even appear a bit more laid back than the capital; however, in general homosexuality is still kept behind closed doors. Some hostels, hotels or lodges may not be comfortable with providing gay couples with a double room. While unfair, it’s better not to make a fuss about it. Cultures everywhere differ and by just going along with their way of things, you can make things easier for yourself. You can always just accept a twin room and try and push the two beds together. The website is a good one and provides lots of information on places to stay and visit, that are gay and lesbian friendly.
