Bike travel in Guatemala is becoming much more common and is a pleasant way to see and experience what the country has to offer. While you can bring your own bike, there are also companies that offer bicycle rentals, in Antigua, Panajachel and Quetzaltenango, for example. If you decide to go solo keep in mind that the roads can be bad in places. Usually your best option is to go for a mountain bike. The good news is that, when your bike breaks down, there are shops throughout the country that can repair it.. Guatemalans are usually fairly willing to help, so if you want a break for a while it isn’t too hard to find a bus that will hoist your bike up onto the roof, or a boat that will take your bike. Another good option is to take a biking tour, which will get you a bit more off-the-beaten-track. A few operators offer trips: Guatemala Adventures (www.guatemalaventures.com) offers a variety of tours -- from half and full day (for example, in Antigua), to multi-day trips exploring the Lake Atitlan region, the northern highlands, or the Atlantic coastline. If you plan to take a motorcycle across country, be forewarned: if something goes wrong, parts may be either expensive or not possible to come by. Since motorcycles are a less common means of transportation in Guatemala, the mechanical assistance available to you may also be limited.
