Getting Around By Boat

While there are a number of places to travel by boat in Guatemala, two are of great importance: the use of boat to navigate Lake Atitlán, and traveling by boat to Lívingston on the eastern coast. One of the best (and quickest) ways to get around Lake Atitlan is by boat. The boats run for most of the day up until late afternoon. The best place to depart for any of the smaller villages around the lake is Panajachel. From here, boats go to Santiago Atitlán, San Pedro La Laguna, San Marcos La Laguna, Santa Cruz La Laguna, Jaibalito and Tzununá. None of the journeys are take very long. You can hire a private boat (lancha) if you so wish, but expect to pay more. On the Caribbean coast, the town of Lívingston can only be accessed by boat. There are two options: the first is to take a boat from Puerto Barrios. The journey lasts approximately 1.5 hours, and boats leave a couple of times per day in each direction. For those looking for a more scenic option, the trip along the Río Dulce, from Río Dulce town to Lívingston is long, but spectacular—a not-to-be-missed experience if you have the time.
