Getting Around By Hitchhiking

While hitchhiking is possible in Guatemala, it is not generally recommendable or safe in most parts of the country. That said, in some areas of Guatemala hitchhiking is the only means of transport available. If you stand on the side of the road and put your arm out, sooner or later somebody will stop to collect you. The rides are not free—as a general rule you can expect to pay about the same prices as you might pay on the bus (approximately $1 per hour).
