Taxis are available all over Guatemala. In Guatemala City, taxis have meters; outside of the city and in the rest of the country, they do not. You should always agree on a fare with the driver before you start the journey or you may have a nasty shock at the end of your ride. Especially in Guatemala City, calling a cab is a safe and convenient option although how quickly you're able to find a taxi depends on the district you are in and the time of day. Taxi drivers are not usually able to change big bills, so be sure to have as close to the correct change as possible before you get in. Taxis may be taken for longer trips, such as visiting nearby attractions, although hiring a cab for a longer trip will cost more. Particularly on longer trips, you should agree to a fee upfront, and expect to pay the driver for the time he/she spends waiting for you. Taxis can also be arranged to travel the distance between two cities, for example, between Guatemala City and Antigua. For a ride of this length, expect to pay somewhere between $35 and $40. Tuk-tuks have become more common of late around some of the popular tourist destinations, such as Panajachel and Antigua. These open-sided rickshaws (or mototaxis) can be a fun way to get around the city. Expect to pay similar fees as for a cab, and always agree to the fee in advance.
