Getting Around By Train

There are currently no passenger trains operating in Guatemala. The last such train traveled between Guatemala City to Puerto Barrio. The route was discontinued in 2007 as the national rail company began to be privatized. There are currently plans to create a train route that will cross all of Central America. The project is called FERISTSA and the current proposal has the line linking Guatemala to Mexico’s rail system in the north, with the railroad continuing south as far as the Panama Canal. Provided that the project goes ahead as planned, the FERISTSA will be an extremely important transportation system in the region.
