Guatemala Visa Information

All travelers to Guatemala will need to present a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry. North Americans, Central Americans, Europeans, Australians and most South Americans do not need advanced visas or proof of return tickets for stays lasting less than 90 days.

In 2006, Guatemala joined the Central American Border Control Agreement (CA-4), which permits the free passage of people and goods throughout El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Travelers are allowed to tour these four countries for a period of up to 90 days without completing any entry and exit formalities at border checkpoints. If you plan on being in the CA-4 region for a period longer than 90 days, you can request an extension or simply leave for a period of 72 hours (possibly to Mexico or Belize) and then reenter to renew your length of stay for another 90 days.

Some nationalities need either a visa or a tourist card to enter Guatemala. These include Czechs, Filipinos, citizens of the Gulf States, Poles, Slovaks, and South Africans. Those who are required to obtain an advanced visa are citizens of most Caribbean and African countries, Bolivians, Colombians, Egyptians, Hungarians, Romanians, Russians, and South Koreans.

Guatemala Work Visas

Work visas are issued for six months, and can be extended once for the same amount of time. Applicants will need to present a Consulate of Guatemala or the Ministry of Foreign Affiairs with several documents, usually including an original and notarized copy of your passport, a recent photo, and a letter from the company for which the applicant works explaining the purpose of the trip. Check with your local consulate to find out the official requirements, as they vary from place to place. The price to apply for a work visa is $50.

When renewing the work visa, applicants will need to again supply an original and notarized copy of your passport, as well as a certificate of economic solvency. Be sure to extend before the expiration of the first work visa, not after, or else you will be fined. If it is necessary to extend your stay past the expiration of the second visa term, temporary residence should be requested.

Guatemala Student Visas

Student visas require more paperwork that work visas. Along with your original passport and a recent photo, need to supply an education license or acceptance letter from the institution you will be studying at, a certificate of economic solvency, a criminal background check, and a letter of authorization from your parents if you are under age. Again, check with your local consulate to find out the official requirements.

Guatemala Tourist Visas

Tourist visas are issued for single entry ($25) and multiple entries ($50), but both types are only valid for a period up to 90 days. To obtain a tourist visa, you will need to submit the following to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: an application form, proof of economic solvency, an affidavit of your contact in Guatemala, a letter of recommendation, a copy of your round-trip ticket or itinerary, and two passport-sized pictures.

A Note About Guatemalan Visa Requirements

Please be aware, visa and passport requirements are subject to change at any time. It is recommended to check with your embassy or consulate for verification.
