Haciendas In Guatemala

One of the most unique places to stay in Guatemala is in a hacienda, a restored country home formerly owned by wealthy citizens. As in the rest of Latin America, Guatemalan haciendas were once elegant, single-family estates that ruled the surrounding areas. As such, haciendas are linked to oppression and exploitation of indigenous society—basically, they were plantations of the colonial era.

Today, many haciendas have been turned into first-rate guest homes akin to bed and breakfasts in the U.S. Haciendas not only come with a storied history: they also often feature stately gardens, horse stables and elegant accommodations. Although more expensive than other places to stay in Guatemala, most haciendas are tranquil, even romantic retreats that offer excellent meals and can easily arrange horseback riding trips or other excursions.
