La Antigua Tours

The colonial city of Antigua makes for a perfectly charming sightseeing tour. You can easily explore the cobblestone streets, churches, and art galleries on your own, but you may also want to hire a guide so you don't miss any tidbits on the history of the city.

The best place to start a tour is at the heart of the city in Parque Central. Here you will find the fountain of Las Sirenas, as well as several other masterpieces of colonial architecture, such as the fantastic Catedral de San José, built in 1541. Before you take in the rest of the city, make sure you are wearing proper footwear: if the soles of your shoes are flimsy, you'll feel every cobblestone under your feet.

Antigua's narrow streets don't allow for double-decker sightseeing buses, but you can hire one of the many horse-drawn carriages that congregate in Parque Central to take you around the city. The tour will cost around Q200 ($25 USD) per hour, and drivers are usually happy to give commentary on the surroundings—although an English-speaking driver may be tough to come by.
