Lake Atitlán is Guatemala's pride and joy, a clear-blue lake ringed by towering volcanoes and tiny Mayan villages. The best thing to do at Lake Atitlán is simply take in the view, whether you are being led by a local on a private boat tour, day hiking or biking along the shores, hovering above the forest canopy on a zip line, riding on horseback, or simply swinging to the rhythm of the lake breeze on a hammock.
Three volcanoes sit on the edge of the lake's southern shore, San Pedro (3,020 meters / 9,908 feet), Toliman (3,158 meters / 10,361 feet) and Atitlan (3,535 meters / 11,598 feet). San Pedro offers breathtaking views on clear days and can be climbed in a day, but be sure to go with a guide. Guides also lead boat tours that crisscross the lake to local villages or land excursions to nearby villages, such as the lively Chichicastenango market where handicrafts and produce are sold (approximately one hour drive, Thursdays and Sundays only).
