The Guatemalan press enjoys almost unrestricted free speech, although some journalists have been punished for making caustic remarks. Defamation is taken very seriously by the Guatemalan judicial system, and can result in long jail sentences. However, the Guatemalan press have shed light on some major human rights and environmental violations committed by the government and multinational corporations, and has been a very robust source for criticism of corrupt or unfair governmental practices.

There are six national newspapers, varying in quality and content. The most-reputable newspapers include Prensa Libre and La Hora. Every paper seems to have a sort of tabloid format, but are still well-written and a great way to practice Spanish. Consult the monthly magazine Revue for practical information as well as what's going on around the country.

There are only five Guatemalan television channels and two news programs, so many channels are syndicated from other parts of Latin America or the United States. Telenovelas and junky American action flicks abound on cable. The only Guatemalan cable channel is Guatevisión.

Radio is very popular in Guatemala, and there are many local stations. Some of the most popular include Patrullaje Informativo, Radio Sonora and broadcasts from “El Independiente,” part of, a popular e-newspaper.
