As is the case in most Latin American countries, the predominant religion in Guatemala is Roman Catholicism, practiced by approximately 55 percent of the population. There is a surprisingly large Protestant following—around 40 percent consider themselves to be Protestants and a large number of these are Evangelical, a denomination that has been on the rise. The indigenous Maya faith is reported to be practiced by around just one percent of the population. There are a the Guatemalan followers of Judaism, Buddhism and Islam are small in numbers.
