Seniors

There is no reason whatsoever why seniors should not feel comfortable about traveling in Guatemala. Just like any other visitor to the country, it is recommended that you take the usual precautions. Try not to carry around valuable possessions or large amounts of money. Be alert for pickpockets, particularly in crowded areas and don’t travel alone or at night where possible. If you are mindful of yourself and your belongings, you are bound to find a trip to Guatemala thoroughly enjoyable. It could also be worth your while inquiring with hotels and tour operators about a reduced rate for seniors. Museums, theatres and attractions usually offer a senior discount and there is no harm in asking if you don’t see anything displayed. The same situation can also apply to car rental which for many seniors may be a more appealing option. Public transport in Guatemala is often rickety, not the most comfortable and sometimes a bit confusing; particularly the notorious ‘chicken’ buses, which are generally packed with people and even animals. There are plenty of travel companies around that offer specific tours tailored to suit seniors or those with specific interests. Some focus on immersing oneself in the local culture and involve home-stays with indigenous families. While others are based on taking Spanish language classes in a historic city such as Antigua and soaking up the rich Guatemalan culture.
