Volcano Climbing Tours - Adventure Tour - Guatemala

Guatemala is part of the Central America Volcanic Arc, a chain of volcanoes formed by an active zone along the Caribbean Plate. The country is home to over 30 volcanoes, which vary in size, type, and activity.

At 4,223 meters (13,935 feet), Tajumulco is the highest volcano in Central America, but it is not the most difficult to climb. Tours can be arranged in nearby Quetzaltenango, and it is possible to complete the climb in one day—although many hikers choose to camp overnight about 150 meters (500 feet) below the summit to get acclimatized to the altitude.

Three peaks near Antigua are also popular climbs: Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango. Agua and Acatenango are blanketed with forest, while the more active Fuego has a bare peak and often a small ash cloud that rises from the summit.

Volcán Pacaya is also easily accessible from Antigua, and lies just 29 kilometers (18 miles) from Guatemala City. Pacaya last erupted in May 2010, spewing ash on Guatemala City and disrupting airport traffic at La Aurora airport.
