Opportunities for paid work in Guatemala are harder to come by than volunteering opportunities. As a general rule, wages are extremely low. One of the easiest options for paid work is to teach English. In many cases, Guatemalans are keen to learn the language, and often English proficiency is required by Guatemalan jobs and universities. The requirement means that there is reasonable demand for English teachers all of the time. It is easier to pick up this work if you have a TEFL or ELT qualification. Opportunities for those without such qualifications are harder to find, and tend to pay less well. Quetzaltenango is a good place to find English teaching jobs. In addition to teaching, the schools themselves sometimes have a need for people who can coordinate between the students and the teachers and keep things running smoothly. This is true for both English schools and Spanish schools. You can either organize teaching positions before you leave home, or find them on the ground in the country (the telephone directory is a good place to start in this instance). For those preferring other options, such as in larger tourist centers like Antigua, foreigners can often find work in hotels, restaurants and bars. This type of work is not well-remunerated, but if you need a little extra cash, it can help.
