Guatemala City’s cathedral is not particularly attractive, but it was built to survive earthquakes - and it has. Indeed, it is one of the only buildings around the square that survived the city's major earthquake in 1917. Inside the cathedral are many colonial paintings, some brought here from Antigua when the capital was moved. However, the most interesting detail is on the outside: Etched into the stone pillars are the names of the vanished victims of the country’s internal conflicts, a poignant affirmation of the permanent fight for justice.
