Inside Guatemala: Zona 10, “the Lively Zone” - City Walk Guatemala City - Guatemala

Zonas 9 and 10 are separated by a broad, tree-lined boulevard called Avenida Reforma. Here, you will find some of the best hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs in all of Guatemala. Zona 10, also known as Zona Viva or “the lively zone” is the most cosmopolitan district in Guatemala City. Zona Viva is where businessmen hurriedly walk in-and-out of high rise buildings, where tourists spend their days meandering in and out of boutiques and cafés, and where Guatemala City´s poshest hipsters infiltrate nightclubs. There are also plenty of expat-owned bars in this area, where you can swap travel stories over imported beers.

Most of Zona Viva sits to the east of Avenida La Reforma, although the lines are somewhat blurred. The main stomping ground is between Avenida La Reforma and Avenida 6a, and Calles 10a and 16. At restaurants in this area, you'll find plenty of outdoor seating, allowing for some of the best people watching in the city. Most travelers also prefer to stay in this part of town, as there are also a handful of comfortable, international chain hotels.

At the southern end of Avenida Reforma is Parque El Obelisco, an oval-shaped expanse of green amidst the concrete jungle of Guatemala City. To get there, you can stoll down the length of Avenida Reforma, which has fairly wide sidewalks compared to most places in the rest of Guatemala City. There are also several statues along the way. Once you reach Parque El Obelisco, you'll find a large fountain and several seating areas for you to relax or people watch.
