Before Guatemala City was ever built in the Valley of the Hermitage, there existed the ancient Mayan city of Kaminaljuyú. Kaminaljuyú, which means ‘Hill of the Dead’ in Quiché was originally built in the vicinity of Lake Miraflores. However, a combination of the lake drying up, among other factors, attributed to its abandonment. Unfortunately, those building the new capital did not take into account the historical value of relics and ruins at the site of the former city and only a few structures and building remain. Today you can visit the Kaminaljuyú Archaeological Park and see tombs, ceremonial sites, ceramics and other Mayan artifacts. Many of the objects found at Kaminaljuyú can also be seen at the Museo Miraflores and the city’s Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology. Open daily.
