Safety

As in other large cities, you should be vigilant of yourself and your belongings. Guatemala City hasn’t got the best reputation when it comes to safety and as a tourist you need to be careful. Don’t have valuables such as your camera, cell phone, laptops, jewelry or wallets out in plain sight. Don’t walk alone and try and stick to walking around in groups. The easiest thing to do is to just travel by taxi wherever possible. Transmetro and Transurbano are the better public transport options and the Zona Viva is usually a much more relaxed and safer area.

For assistance from the National Civil Police-Tel: 110 or from the Fire Brigade-Tel: 122 and 123.
