INGUAT is the national office of tourism. You can visit its headquarters at 7th Avenue 1-17, Zone 4. They can also be contacted by telephone at 1500 and 24212810 or by email to: asistur@inguat.gob.gt, info@inguat.gob.gt. www.visitguatemala.com.

There is also a Chamber of Tourism (Camara de Turismo CAMTUR), which is especially helpful when it comes to non conventional tourism and offers comprehensive information on tour operators, transport companies, hotels, rural tourism, bird watching and extreme sports, among others. For currency exchange, the local banks are the best option, with plenty throughout the city, including Bank Gytcontinental (www.gytcontinental.com.gt) headquarters 6th Avenue 9-08 Zone 9, Industrial Bank (www.bi.com.gt) headquarters 7th Avenue 5-10 Zone 4 in the Financial Center and finally the Banrural (www.banrural.com.gt) headquarters in Avenue La Reforma 2-56 Zone 9. There are other banks but these are the bigger ones where you can definitely change currency and travelers checks. Guatemala has a unified ATM network, so you shouldn’t have any trouble withdrawing money from your home account but take not that a small fee usually applies.

Letters and postcards can be sent via the "El Correo" postal service. The prices are generally quite reasonable and there are plenty of offices situated in Guatemala City. (www.elcorreo.com.gt)

Cell phones are cheap and convenient, you can buy basic handsets and a pre-paid sim card for around $15 upwards.

Almost all of the hotels and some restaurants offer Wi-Fi. If they don’t, there are Internet cafes everywhere. An hour’s internet usually costs $1. There are also lost of launderettes in Guatemala City. La Sercha is a popular one. (www.lasercha.com).

For medical services hospitalesdeguatemala.com and medicosdeguatemala.com give plenty of information on the various hospitals and medical services available in the city and country. For emergency services call 122 for the fire brigade and 123 for the paramedics. The National Civil Police can be contacted on tel: 110. There is also the Red Cross (www.guatemala.cruzroja.org) and the city is full of pharmacies, Carolina and H is one of the bigger pharmacies and has branches throughout the city with home delivery (www.carolinayh.com).

In the Historic Center, there is a gym Smartraining ($ 3 per day), located on 5th Avenue 8-40, tel: 22382499, and there is another popular gym near the Zona Viva; Worldgym is located on Boulevard Los Proceres 25-74, Zone 10, tel: 24236000, www.worldgym.com.gt.

If you want to find a good book and enjoy a delicious coffee, Sophos Bookstore, offers an extensive catalog of classic books and bestsellers spanning several literary genres. Located on 4th Avenue 12-59, Zona 10 in Plaza Fontabella Tel: 24197070. www.sophosenlinea.com.

You can print photos from your digital camera at Quickphoto agencies throughout the city and country. www.quickphotoonline.com

For some relaxation, Rebeccana Spa offers massage services, a sauna, haircuts, beauty treatments and more. Located at Centro Comercial Los Proceres 3rd floor. Tel: 23618514. They’re usually quite busy so it is advisable to make an appointment to ensure availability. Donald's is a good barbershop that offers cuts for both adults and children. Located in Tiffany Plaza 13th Street "A" 7-19, Zona 10.
