El Tulate

The beautiful beach at Tulate gently slopes into the ocean, creating the perfect setting for long walks and refreshing dips. The low-key surf is safe for children or weak swimmers to venture out and have a splash around. At the weekends, there are lifeguards on duty. Unlike many other beaches on the Pacific coast, it is surprisingly rubbish-free, although the canal side of the beach can not make the same claim to fame. To reach the beach, take a lancha for $0.55 across the canal. A short paved street, lined with comedores and tiendas, leads to the beach.

Only a handful of accommodation options exist in Tulate but they are agreeable ones. Villa Victoria is a tourist centre that is rather busy and noisy on the weekends but deserted during the week. Rooms cost $18.75 with shared bathroom or $31.25 with private bathroom. There is one on both sides of the canal. Prices are the same. It is a difficult toss up between a two minute walk to the beach or a breezy room that opens onto a glorious canal view.

Hotel Sol y Mar is on the wrong side of the canal but has cheap, acceptable rooms starting from $11.50. Playa Paraíso is a ten minute walk along the beach (towards the left) and has a more sophisticated set-up with a restaurant, swimming pool, spacious rooms and hammocks in the gardens. Rooms cost $41.

Playa Paraíso has the only restaurant that is open every day. Otherwise there are plenty of comedores serving seafood and typical local food. During the week most of them are closed. There is no ATM in Tulate. The nearest one is at the halfway town where the bus stops for a while.
