Getting To And Away

At the bus triangle, there is a perfectly located liquado stand (great fruit shakes but ask them to go easy on the sugar) next to the commercial center. Waiting here, buses will pass going downhill to Taxisco, Chiquimulilla and the El Salvador border or uphill to Antigua and Chimaltenango (every 20 to 30 minutes, from 6am to 6pm). Across the road, a line of buses head to different towns on the way to Mexico (every 20 to 30 minutes, from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.). The ayudante will help you find the right one. A little uphill, on the right hand-side, buses stop on their way to Guatemala City (every 15 minutes, 4 a.m. to 8 p.m.)

There is also a minibus stand here for Puerto San José (departing every 15 minutes, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.) costing $1.25 for the 25 minute ride. A second Puerto San José minibus stand is in town at 4 Avenue and 11 Calle, opposite the not-so-rosy Hotel Rosario.

The bus station has frequent departures to the same destinations as the bus triangle. If beginning a journey in Escuintla, the bus station is the best place to start when heading east, and the bus triangle for everywhere else. Then you can avoid the extra fifteen minute stop and wait for more passengers.
