The Pacific Coast has a lot more to offer than most tourists give it credit for. Apart from surfing in Sipacate or marveling at the unique eco-systems that have built up around the mangroves and volcanic sand beaches in Tilapa and Monterrico, there are several significant Mayan and Olmec archeological sites around Retalhuleu, Santa LucĂa Cotzumalguapa and La Democracia, a couple of awesome fun parks and a section of coastline that hosts one of the best places in the world to catch a sailfish. For those seeking some adrenalin thrills, there are a couple of volcanoes to be climbed as well as kayaking, mountain biking and rafting adventures.
Surprisingly, finding a place to swim is harder than you would think as undertows and rips are prolific along the coastline. The best places to swim are in the pleasant seaside village of Tulate or at the towns of Puerto San José or Champerico. If getting away from it all is all you are looking for, there are a couple of acclaimed luxury hotels.
