Accommodation Overview

The best choice of accommodation is in Monterrico, the only town on the Pacific Coast to have everything from attractive budget hostels to luxury resorts and bungalows. Otherwise it is best to pick your destination on the basis of the type of accommodation you desire.

The city day-tripper towns of Puerto San José, Iztapa, and Champerico have basic, unappealing hotels unless you stay in one of the luxury out-of-town lodges. Tilapita and Sipacate are rustic but atmospheric and authentic, Tulate is still small but serving an ever increasing number of visitors on the weekend, while Las Lisas has a couple of renowned up-market hotels. All the towns on the Pacific Highway itself have a small, unremarkable but acceptable selection of hotels. Retalhuleu, though, has some lovely places to stay.

In Monterrico it is possible to find a room at a beach-side hotel, with swimming pool, from $5 per person but everywhere else it generally starts at $10 per person if traveling alone and $6 per person if in a couple. Air-conditioning adds at least $10 to the room price per night. Generally, fans and private bathrooms come as standard. Sipacate has the only official campsites, but in many places locals would be happy to let you set up camp for next to nothing. How safe all your gear would be is another matter.
