Safety

The Pacific Coast is a fairly safe part of Guatemala, as far as this country goes, especially in the small seaside villages. As always, though, be careful with valuables, cash and cameras. Be especially mindful after dark. Crime is generally opportunistic and therefore could occur anyplace and anywhere, but the majority of tourists are unlikely to encounter any problems. Three trouble spots are the towns of Coatepeque and Puerto San José, which have a somewhat dodgy reputation after dark ,and the Bilbao Stones in Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, which should not be visited by travelers alone.
