Biotopo Monterrico-hawaii - Other Activity Monterrico - Guatemala

Covering 2,800 hectares, the Biotopo Monterrico-Hawaii was set up in 1977 to protect the delicate eco-system that has evolved along the coast, the estuarine channel and among the costal mangroves and lagoons. The area is home to caimans (a small alligator), green iguanas, freshwater tortoises and several endemic species including an amphibian with four eyes (two up, two down) that is now extinct in the rest of the world. 250 species of bird live here and another 250 species pass by on their migratory route between North and South America. Until the construction of a bridge at Iztapa in 2008, this isolated area was only accessible by water thus ensuring the survival of so much wildlife and native flora and fauna. As Monterrico’s popularity for tourism is all set to increase, it is important that the conservation of the Biotopo is not put at risk by heedless and large-scale development.
