Things To See And Do - Other Activity Monterrico - Guatemala

The most obvious things to do are lie by the pool or take a walk on the beach. Horse-riding on the beach is available at $8.75 p.p. for one hour or quad-biking for $37.50 an hour. To experience the Biotopo Monterrico, take a boat tour through the mangroves and lagoons, visit the wildlife sanctuary and museum at Tortugario Monterrico or head up to Parque Hawaii to visit their sanctuary.

Monterrico has a relaxed attitude towards activities. Guides or facilitators will frequently approach you to boost numbers and it makes no difference to price if booked directly or through a middle-man. Guides should have an official ID. Invariably it will be a kid who accompanies horse-riders.

During turtle nesting season, simply walking up and down the beach at night can result in the discovery of a female laying her eggs. Guides will offer to accompany you for $3 to $5 p.p. and while informative are not absolutely necessary. Bring a flashlight, walk around and look for non-moving flashlights – they will have found a turtle. However, women should be careful about going in ones or twos.

Two companies are currently offering whale watching trips. Pacific Whale Watching,, has regular departures on Saturdays and Sundays from December to April. These can be joined from Antigua or at the marina near Puerto San Jose. Guests of the other company, Productos Mundiales,, have reported terrible trips including seven hours out to sea in a boat with no toilet or shade.

There is one Spanish school in town. Twenty hours of lessons per week costs $90 at El Proyecto Linguistico. Homestay and accommodation options also available.
