When To Go

Monterrico is hot all year round. Slow season is from August to October, coinciding with rainy season – it can rain for a few minutes to all day. The mosquitoes are at their worst in rainy season. High season is November to mid May.

Otherwise, when to go depends a lot on what you want to see. Nesting turtles can be seen from August to January, while baby turtles are released every evening from mid September to February. From November to March, whales, orcas and dolphins are passing down the coast and can sometimes be seen from the shore.

It is worth taking into account the huge differences between weekdays and weekends. During the week, Monterrico can be so slow the town seems deserted, room rates are often cheaper and visitors may have the beach to themselves. Starting from Friday night, hordes of Guatemalans descend from the capital to spark the town into action, bringing with them coolers full of drinks, high spirits and lots of noise.
