Parque Hawaii Arcas - Other Activity Monterrico - Guatemala

Parque Hawaii is actually the stretch of beach 7 km east of Monterrico but also refers to the respected Guatemalan NGO, ARCAS, who have a base here and run conservation and community development projects. In addition to the turtle hatchery, they also look after unwanted pet iguanas, caimans, Jesus lizards (can walk on water) and fresh water tortoises. Any off-spring are released into the wild at an appropriate age.

The creative and interesting displays are in Spanish but one of the volunteers will be happy to show you around and explain everything in English and sometimes other languages as well. On the way to the beach, there is a delightful trail relating the importance of turtles to different cultures across the world as well as advice on how to preserve turtle populations.

A big part of the work by ARCAS is to help develop sustainable and environmentally friendly habitats within the local communities. Tourists can assist in a fun way by learning how to make bracelets and hammocks for $6 and so support a village that has eroded into the ocean and left without resources.

The entrance fee is a requested donation of $1.25 although any amount is appreciated.

ARCAS is popular with volunteers who participate in various projects depending on the time of year. These projects included collecting eggs for the hatchery, wildlife breeding and release programs, local environmental education and mangrove conservation. The cost is $70 per week including lodging and kitchen access. When there is space, tourists can come to stay for $10 a night and go with the volunteers on an egg hunt.
