Up in the hills with a commanding view of the active Volcan Santiaguito, which still lets out regular mushroom clouds, Comunidad Alianza is a wonderful place to come and relax for a few days or volunteer on a traditional finca. The locally-run enterprise involves forty families and produces coffee, macadamia nuts, items made from bamboo, aqua pura and biofuel.
Different packages can be arranged including tours of the plantation and the facilities. There is a refreshing waterfall 20 minutes walk from the main house and birds can be seen all over although sunrise is the best time.
Meals can be arranged but the food is basic and portions are small, so you might want to bring something extra. Volunteers can cook their own meals in the kitchen.
Electricity is provided via hydro-power or a generator and usually runs till 10pm.
