Climbing Santa Maria (3772 m) can be easily done from Xela. You can start walking at the village Llanos del Pinal, 5 km south of Xela. The trip to the summit takes about four hours. The last 20 minutes are quite steep, but, once at the top, you'll have a beautiful view of the volcanoes around Xela. To the south, you can see the volcanoes of Lake Atitlan; to the north, on a clear day, you can see Tajumulco and Tacana.
