This is a stunning hike if you are lucky with the weather, but do not attempt without a guide because you are climbing a serious near-4000m mountain and the conditions can change in an instant. It is a semi-steep climb, similar to Pacaya but it takes slightly longer (five-and-a-half hours), to reach the summit crater, where you set up camp. The view of the surrounding mountains is stunning but the highlight is getting up in the dark to watch the nearby Fuego erupting, showering fire some 100m into the air. Other companies operate this route but beware of poor standards and check all equipment before you leave.
