This ruin site includes a lush garden in front and a fountain at its center. Built as a school by Mercedarian friars in 1757, it was closed by Spanish King Carlos III just four years later because it did not have royal approval. After a brief stint as the Royal customs house, it was destroyed by the earthquake in 1773. If you are a ruins buff, then it's worth a visit and the entrance fee. However, many travelers may find it sufficient just to peer from the outside fence. Although interesting in its own way, San Jeronimo tends to be one of the less impressive ruins in Antigua.
