Historical Building

By Will Gray

Antigua's most impressive church looks most impressive around the middle of the day, when the sun illuminates its ornate yellow facade. Inside there is a pleasant courtyard with a large central fountain that is best viewed from the top level, where you can look out toward the surrounding volcanoes.

It was originally constructed in 1548, but suffered severe damage in the 1717 earthquake. Rebuilding took 50 years only for it to be hit by another earthquake six years later; it was finally repaired by 1855.
