Climbing Pacaya

Climbing Pacaya is a mind-blowing trek for anyone keen on seeing volcanoes up close and in action. Take the morning trip for a better chance of enjoying clear skies (and views), but during good weather you can go in the afternoon for a spectacular early-evening light show.

The two-hour climb is tough in certain places, especially at the end, which involves scrambling up volcanic scree. However, it's worth the effort. Once at the top (providing the wind is blowing the sulphurous smoke in the opposite direction), you get a close-up view of red lava rivers flowing from the active crater.

The tour heads back before sunset, but keep looking back on the way down: you might see eruptions from the top.

Note: At the time of writing, Pacaya was becoming more active, so check to make sure the climb is still safe.
