When To Go

Being the ‘number on religious destination in Central America’, Esquipulas gets packed out not only during the main pilgrimage period in mid-January but also every weekend as well as a second minor pilgrimage episode in early March. At this time you must book your hotel ahead and you get up early if you wish to get a glimpse of the revered Black Christ as the basilica fills up. The parades in honor of the saint happen over ten days with the main day being January 15th. At this time of year the climate is quite pleasant. During the summer months, the town heats up and there are less pilgrims so this is a good time to negotiate on room prices. The rainy season lasts from May to October with an average temperature of around 25ºC (77ºF) although drops down to 10ºC (50ºF) are possible at night so bring a light coat.
