In Rio Dulce (an area containing two towns, Fronteras and El Relleno), you can expect hot weather and stunning natural beauty. The towns are located at the mouth of Guatemala´s largest lake, Lago de Izabal, which drains along the stunning Rio Dulce into the Caribbean Sea. The towns themselves aren´t much to see, the real places to go are outside of town and by the water.
Rio Dulce hotels range from the threadbare, orphanage-run Hotel Backpacker´s for about US$4.00 a night to much nicer options such as Hotel Banana Palms, in nearby San Felipe, which offers lakefront suites for a little over US$100.00. If you´re looking for something in the middle, consider the ecoactivity-rich Hacienda Tijax (US$30-50.00), which offers swinging bridges over mangrove swamps and cheap campgrounds (it´s next to a swamp, so take the word "cheap" with a grain of salt).
